Saturday Summary

What a busy day it was for BYU fans and the TotalBlueSports.com staff on a Saturday that began with a tailgating bang and ended with BYU's annual Blue-White game at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

At a venue jam packed with fans from across the country, some driving, some flying many miles to be in attendance, TBS held its first annual Blue-White tailgate party. Attendees got the chance to mingle, watch video clips and listen to BYU's newest athletic director Tom Holmoe speak about BYU sports.

Bleachers Sports Grill temporarily replaced the World Wide Web as the home of TotalBlueSports.com's chat room and message board forums. Fans were treated to BYU highlights from the 1990 Miami game, 1996 Pig Skin Classic with Texas A&M and many more memorable clips from BYU classics.

After everyone had placed their orders and taken their seats, Tom Holmoe took center stage and spoke to TotalBlueSports.com members. He opened the forum up to questions from the BYU fans in attendance. Topics of discussion included the current basketball coaching situation, BYU and the Pac 10, Mountain West Conference refereeing, instant replay, fans wearing blue and much, much more.

Following Holmoe's engaging conversations with well-fed fans, tailgate party attendees were treated to clips from the new 2005 TBS Recruiting DVD. Nearly two and a half hours after the festivities began, the tailgaters made their way over to LaVell Edwards Stadium, many picking up a copy of the DVD along with the new, "If You Bleed Blue, Read Blue—TotalBlueSports.com" T-shirt on the way out..

The west parking lot was filled with cars as an estimated 12,000 fans, in true Mendenhall fashion, took no heed of the inclement weather and got down to the business of football at the annual Blue-White Game.

The first teams took the field and, in a classic BYU ball control scheme, quarterback John Beck marched the offense downfield, completing his first six passes. Beck and the first teamers eventually settled for a field goal after stalling in the "Blue Zone."

The blue clad offense never got closer to the end zone the rest of the day as the white jerseys on defense kept both running backs and receivers from pay dirt. Two more field goals were all that the offense could muster.

Putting Things into Perspective

Despite a disappointing offensive showing, one thing is for sure, BYU fans only caught a glimpse of what BYU's offensive staff had been working on during spring competition.

Fans should not get discouraged by the low scoring output of what many thought would be a repeat of Texas Tech's performance vs. Cal in the 2004 Holiday Bowl. There was going to be, as Tom Holmoe put into perspective for BYU fans during the TBS tailgating party, a "limited showing" because injuries limited the depth of personnel available for the game.

To get a more accurate understanding of how BYU's offensive unit has developed this year, go over the TBS spring practice scrimmage reports.
