Lightning to Strike Same Place Twice?

Two years ago, BYU landed Austin Collie, a Sacramento wide receiver that went on to become the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year. The Cougars have returned Collie's alma mater to look at the quarterback that made Collie look so good.

Newly hired quarterback coach Brandon Doman is working as hard off the field as a coach as he did when he was on the field as a player. He is hitting the recruiting trail hard and finding some real gems, one of which is Chandler Clemons, a California quarterback prospect.

"I just got an email today from Coach Doman," Clemons said. "He is in Florida right now recruiting another qb. When he gets back he will let me know where things stand. I feel BYU is close to offering me a scholarship."

The 6'0", 185-pound prospect just got back from a Nike camp where he felt he did well.

"I ran a 4.7 forty," Clemons said. "I had 33-inch vertical leap, I did 13 reps on the bench and had a 4.3 shuttle."

Right now Sacramento State is the only school to offer Clemons, but San Jose State was just at his school and is close to offering as is BYU. Clemons said Cal and Oregon are both expressing interest too.

"Right now I am still open," Clemons said. "I'm going to wait to see what happens with the different schools, but I really like BYU. If they offer they will be right up there as a favorite even if Cal and Oregon offered I would still really like BYU."

Clemons who stars at Oak Ridge high school in northern California, was teammates with Cougar star Austin Collie. Cougar fans who have seen high school highlights of Collie have also seen Clemons as he was the on throwing to Collie.

"He was here when I was a sophomore," Clemons said. "He made things easy for me as a quarterback. He is just amazing. I watched his games this last year and did great. I am good friends with the Collie family, and Austin's dad really wants me to go to BYU."

Clemons said his strengths are his agility in the pocket. He moves around well and is very athletic. He said he is also great at running the ball. As far as his weakness' go he said his height is a negative, but said he still hopes to grow a few more inches.

The things he is looking for most in a school is academics. He said he wants a good education because not everybody can be professional football players. He will also be looking for early playing time. Either as a freshman or red shirt freshman. Staying close to home is not a priority but it would be nice if he could.

Academics shouldn't be an issue for him, he has 3.8 GPA, and just took the SAT for the first time.

Clemons is not a Mormon but that will not affect his decision regarding BYU.

"BYU being a religious school doesn't bother me." Clemons said. "I just want a school that I can enjoy the environment." TotalBlueSports.com will keep in touch with Clemons to find out if BYU does in fact offer.
