TBS 8/15 Evening Practice Quick Hits

Five hours after the fans dispersed from Monday morning's open practice, the BYU football team got back together for part two of the two-a-day practice. After position drills and special teams work, the offense and defense faced off again in a short scrimmage.

Cougar players went through a tough practice Monday morning in front of many anxious and excited fans. Monday evening was a little less intense for the team, only going in helmets and jerseys for 90 minutes rather than the full two hours.

The team worked on refining some of the skills that were on display in the morning's scrimmage. Those position drills were followed by work with the kickoff and kickoff return teams. Finally the ones, the twos and the threes all got one chance against each other in the "Blue Zone."

Here are a few quick hits from the practice:

-Jared McLaughlin was booming kickoffs into the end zone during special teams work

-Bryce Mahuika, Justin Robinson and Curtis Brown were back returning kicks. Justin Robinson showed the lighting quickness that fans witnessed on Total Blue Sport's 2005 Recruiting DVD. (For purchasing information, please click here: 2005 Recruiting DVD)

-The first team offense scored on the first team defense in the "Blue Zone" scrimmage at the end of practice. The score came when John Beck hit tight end Jonny Harline, who out-jumped Dustin Gabriel in the back corner of the end zone.

-The second team offense only took one play to score on the second team defense. Matt Berry connected with tight end Andrew George, who leapt and pulled the ball away from the defender.

-The third team offense did not fare as well as the other two units. Corby Hodgkiss picked off a Matt Berry pass intended for Joe Griffen, who had a step on his defender and was streaking into the end zone.
