Recruiting Review: 2000 begins a year-by-year analysis of BYU's recruiting classes. The first year to go under the microscope is the class of 2000. BYU's millennial recruiting class stands out more for its high attrition than any other factor.

Total in class: 23

Breakdown: 2000 marked the second to last of class for LaVell Edwards. The class featured some major contributors such as JC transfer running back Brian McDonald, linebacker Paul Walkenhorst and running back Marcus Whalen. However, some of the highly anticipated members of the class never worked. C.J. Ah You is now a starter at Oklahoma. Jordan Hill and Michael Marquardt are starters at Arizona State. Bluechip DB recruit Isaiah Joiner quit the team. Brock Stratton is a two-time All-Big XII selection at linebacker for Texas Tech. 52 % of the signees from this class left the team, 71% of whom transferred to another school.

C.J. Ah You / DL / Cedar Hills, UT Ah You was probably more well know for his actions off the field than on it. Ah You hardly played at BYU, due to injury and disciplinary issues. He was ultimately suspended from the team. Ah You transferred to a junior college and then signed with the Oklahoma Sooners where he starts at DE and was recently selected to the all-bowl team.

Matt Allen / WR / Phoenix,AZ Allen had his biggest season last year when he recorded 21 receptions for 272 yards. He will be a featured receiver in 2006.

Judd Anderton / DL / Tacoma, WA Anderton was recruited by some Pac-10 schools, but he has not seen much playing time in his Cougar career due to injuries. He had a solid spring practicec and should see time next season at defensive end.

K.C. Bills / LB / Littleton, CO Bills saw time as a linebacker during freshman season in 2003. Last year he switched to the katback position and suffered what is likely to be a career ending injury.

Cameron Casper / OL / San Diego, CA Never enrolled.

Lawrence Cowan / LB / Salt Lake Hardly played at BYU. Left the team in 2004.

Quinn Gooch / DB / Tucson, AZ Gooch saw time in 9 games recording 30 tackles in 2005. He could be starter at safety this season.

Jordan Hill / LB / Pocatello, ID Hill redshirted his fresh season then transferred to Arizona State following his LDS mission. He now starts at DE for the Sun Devils.

Kai Jones / OL / Richland, WA Jones never played and eventually left the team.

Isaiah Joiner / RB/ATH / Sealy, TX One of the most highly touted DB recruits in recent years, Joiner played in the 2000 season and then left BYU after the season.

Junior Kato / OL / Daly City, CA Kato never joined the team after serving his LDS mission.

Eddie Keele / OL / Othello, WA Keele came back from a mission in 2003 and immediately started at OT. He is a solid lineman for the Cougars. Injuries caused him to miss reps in games and practice earlier on, but he seems to be healthy now, starting all 12 games in 2005.

Brian McDonald / RB / Cerritos JC McDonald had a stellar career at BYU. He had over 1,000 yards despite having his senior season cut short by an ACL injury. McDonald was key in the Cougars come from behind overtime victory at Virginia in 2000.

Michael Marquardt / DL / San Marcos, CA Marqurdt played in his true Freshman season with the Cougs then went on a mission. He started four games at defensive end in 2004. Marquardt left the team just before the 2005 season and is now at Arizona State.

Adam Nelson / DB / Orem Nelson was a fixture on the practice team for the last three seasons.

Danny Phillips / DB / Cerritos JC Phillips saw some playing time in 2001 getting four tackles in six games. Played in only three games as a senior.

Brent Pollock / DL / Rolling Hills Estates, CA Pollock never played in any games at BYU. He was suspended from the team on the day that Gary Crowton was hired as head coach.

Danny Southwick / QB / Provo, UT Southwick never played at BYU. He transferred to Snow JC after his mission and is now the fourth string QB at Utah.

Brock Stratton / LB / San Antonio, TX Stratton went on his mission right out of high school. Then he returned there was confusion regarding his scholarship and position with the team so he transferred to Texas Tech. He was a second team All-Big XII selection at LB in 2004 and 2005 for the Red Raiders.

Joel Theler / DB / Salt Lake City, UT Theler played very little at BYU due to injury. He left the team in 2004

Paul Walkenhorst / DL / Highland, UT BYU switched Walkenhorst to LB as a true freshman because there was a desperate need at the position. He filled in nicely finishing his freshman season with 48 tackles in 10 games. Walkenhorst struggled since then due to injuries. He finally came back for the 2005 season after receiving a medical redshirt. Walkenhorst had 43 tackles in 11 games in his final season with BYU.

Marcus Whalen / RB / Waldorf, MD Whalen was known for being a strong physical back when he came to BYU and he did not disappoint. He ran through would-be tacklers for 217 yards in nine games. Whalen was suspended from school in 2001, but came back to run for nearly 100 yards as a starter in 2002. In 2003, he earned the starting running back spot again Ofa Mohetau stepped on his foot in warm-ups before the season opener against Georgia Tech. The accident sidelined Whalen for most of his junior season. He was expected to be a senior leader on the team but was expelled from BYU for another incident. He transferred to Southern Utah University but never played a down for the Thunderbirds.

Derrus Wilson / DB / Blinn JC Wilson Played in 10 games at CB and recorded 19 tackles and one interception. He played in 10 games as Sr. and had eight tackles.
