"Matt was offered on Friday night," his mother, Joyce, told us today, "and he committed last night to Coach (Gary) Crowton. He really wants to play with his brother and we were impressed with a tour of the new facilities (being built)."
Ah You was a 1st team all-state player and region MVP who shined at linebacker and fullback, where he averaged 5.5 yards per carry.
ASU like him on offense and he has cancelled a trip to the Pac 10 school set up for this weekend. He's also canceling plans to visit Colorado State.
"There was a lot of pressure on him," his mother admitted. "He tripped to Hawaii in December and they offered him on his visit and Utah has been really showing a lot of attention."
The plan is for Matt to play a year and then go on a mission.
"He's really young, he doesn't turn 18 until June, so they'll both be ready this fall to be on the field together," Joyce said, referring to C.J.'s rehab from knee surgery.
The scary thing about recruiting is the "out of sight, out of mind" factor previous visit feelings fad and the last impression is the strongest. And when you're talking about a school like Miami, one of the nation's top programs right now, it's doubly scary.
The good news is that once home Ofa's excitement about the Miami trip will fade and everything will balance out. The other good news: he didn't get caught up in the enthusiasm of the trip, like many teenagers do, and commit to the Canes.
Still, this one is going to be close…
*** On last Friday's visit list we had one of the A&M Consolidated High players but missed one.
There were two Chase's who came in: Chase Loveridge, a 5-11, 200 pound fullback who is Gary Crowton's nephew and a probable walkon, as well as Chase Williams a tall 6-3, 190 pound receiver/def. back who isn't LDS but is a solid all-around athlete lettering in football, basketball and baseball.
