Scrimmage Report 8/18

The team scrimmaged for the second time this fall as the two-deep roster is starting to firm up.

Initial Observations

-O'Neill Chambers wasn't suited up today as he's being held out of practices for the time being.

-Ross Apo wasn't suited up as he looks to have a minor injury which is holding him out of practices. As of right now, Apo hasn't cracked the rotation at wideout, so he'll have a lot of work to do when he gets back.

First Set

-Riley Nelson got the first set of reps with the 1s on offense going against the 1s on defense. He finished completing all 3 of his passes for 25 yards.

-Highlights during the set included a 15-yard completion to Devin Mahina which saw Mahina stretch high in snaring down a pass that was slightly overthrown.

Second Set

-Jake Heaps then got in with the 2s on offense going against the 2s on defense. He finished going 1-2 for 5 yards on a completion to Spencer Hafoka on a set that saw a lot of running attempts.

-Kyle Van Noy and Thomas Bryson combined for a sack which stalled the offense at midfield.

Third Set

-Heaps then got another set with the 1s on offense going against the 2s on defense. His lone pass attempt was complete to Richard Wilson from 14-yards out for a touchdown.

-The set was greatly aided by JJ Di Luigi who had what may be the most impressive run of camp so far in as he cut the ball against the grain for a 41-yard gain.

Fourth Set

-Nelson then got in with the 2s on offense against the 1s on defense in which he looked as impressive as he has all fall. He completed 4-6 passes for 41 yards with completions to Matt Marshall for 14 yards, Austin Holt for 14 yards, David Foote for 2 yards and then to JD Falsev for 11 yards.

-The defensive highlight during the set was Jameson Frazier standing Foote up on his reception to hold him to minimal yardage.

Fifth Set

-Nelson got in with the 1s against the 1s and went 3-4 for 25 yards with completions to Luke Ashworth for 3 yards, Wilson for 21 yards and to Di Luigi for 1 yard.

-Highlights included Nelson buying a lot of time with his feet and then finding Wilson down the field for 21 yards and Brian Logan laying a crushing hit on Marshall to jar the ball loose on Nelson's lone incompletion.

Sixth Set

-The final set saw Heaps with the 2s on offense going against the 2s on defense. He finished going 4-6 for 25 yards with completions to Marshall for 9 yards, Foote for 6 yards, Hafoka for 2 yards and then to Algernon Brown for 8 yards.

-Highlights included Aveni Leung-Wai providing a big hit on AJ Moore on a run that went for no gain, and Zac Stout getting into the mix for the first time providing some very good run support.

-Other highlights during the scrimmage included the offense getting it into the endzone 3 out of 4 times during short-yardage drills and Riley Stephenson looking good punting the ball several times inside the 5-yard line.
