Fall Practice Report: Day 11

Friday's practice session was relatively intense. The team is preparing for the final scrimmage of fall, which will largely determine which players play and what their roles will be. Quarterback play was good on Friday, and the battle between Jake Heaps and Riley Nelson continues to be a good one.

Initial Observations

-The practice was much more intense, with head coach Bronco Mendenhall doing a lot of coaching. Players seemed more focused, which one would expect given that they're closing in on their final scrimmage of the fall.

-Ross Apo looked hurt, as he seemed unable to make the breaks he usually makes during the practice session. It's doubtful at this point that he'll be able to make the early impact most were hoping for.

-Cody Hoffman sat out of Friday's practice, as he's working through his own bumps and bruises. Hoffman has had a very productive camp, earning him the fourth receiver spot which should earn him plenty of reps come game time.

Team Drills

-Jake Heaps got the first reps of the practice session with the ones on offense going against the ones on defense. He finished the set going 5-of-7 for 84 yards, which included a 52-yard touchdown pass to O'Neill Chambers.

-He also completed passes to J.J. Di Luigi for 9 yards, Chambers for 6 yards, Luke Ashworth for 8 yards and Bryan Kariya for 9 yards during the set. The defensive highlight was Thomas Bryson busting through the line to record a sack, which set up third-and-long.

-Riley Nelson got the next set with the twos going against the twos and went 2-of-5 for 27 yards with completions of 20 yards to Rhen Brown - which was heavily disputed by the defense, as they thought he was out of bounds - and 7 yards to B.J. Peterson.

-The set was ended when Jray Galea'i picked off Nelson on a pass that should have been caught by Austin Holt. Holt tipped it high in the air, making for an easy pick by Galea'i.

-Other defensive highlights included Brian Logan knocking down a pass and Alani Fua recording a sack. Zac Stout got the reps with the twos at inside linebacker along with Austen Jorgensen, while it was Aveni Leung-Wai and Shane Hunter manning the two inside spots with the ones.

Final Team Drills

-Heaps got the first set of reps during final team drills with the ones on offense against the ones on defense. He finished the set going 2-of-4 for 14 yards with completions to Di Luigi and Spencer Hafoka for 6 and 8 yards, respectively.

-The set ended with Heaps making a bad read on a pass where there was triple coverage. The pass was picked off by Steven Thomas.

-Nelson got the next set with the twos going against the twos. He went 6-of-8 yards with completions of 8 yards to B.J. Peterson, 12 yards to Rhen Brown, 18 yards to Ross Apo and finally a 10-yard pass to Austin Holt.

-The defense held the offense just short of the end zone, and Mitch Payne booted through a short field goal to end the set.

-Nelson then got another set with the ones going against the ones. He went 4-of-6 for 60 yards with completions of 29 yards to Di Luigi, 5 yards to Richard Wilson, another pass to Di Luigi for 8 yards and an 18-yard touchdown pass to Chambers to finish the set.

-Defensive highlights included Jameson Frazier providing tight coverage and leading to one of the incompletions, and Vic So'oto recording a sack.

-A scary moment occurred after safety Andrew Rich had to be helped off the field, but the injury was reported as a bruised forearm following the practice session.
