Fall Practice Report: Day 13 (Updated)

The team practiced in shells following Saturday's intense scrimmage that all but firmed up the final two-deep roster heading into the Washington game. G-man was there Monday taking copious notes once again, as it's very much crunch time for the players who hope to earn regular playing slots.

Situational Drills

-The defense ruled the third-down situational drills early on in practices. Coaches set up third down from 2, 5 and then 7 yards out with the offense only able to convert a couple of them.

-Riley Nelson got the first shot with the ones on offense against the ones on defense. After three short runs that were held to no gain, Nelson went to work on trying to convert third-and-5.

-His first pass was dropped by Joshua Quezada on what was very tight coverage provided by Aveni Leung-Wai. Vic So'oto recorded a sack on the next play, which was followed up by a pass to O'Neill Chambers that went for negative yardage.

-Jake Heaps got the next set of situational work with the twos on offense going against the twos on defense. Quezada gained 7 yards on a third-and-2 situational play which was then followed by three straight plays to convert third-and-5.

-After a sack by Jadon Wagner, Heaps ran it 6 yards for a first down. The final play saw Heaps throwing a pass that flew over the head of his intended target.

-On the lone 3rd-and-8 play, Heaps hit Chambers far short of the first down on a play that only gained four yards.

-The ones at inside linebackers were Shane Hunter playing Mike and Aveni Leung-Wai at Buck with Zac Stout at Mike and Brandon Ogletree at Buck getting the work with the twos.

-The team did extensive work on kick and punt return with Chambers, J.J. Di Luigi, McKay Jacobson, Ross Apo and J.D. Falslev all taking turns returning kicks.

Final Team Drills

-Riley Nelson got the first set with the ones on offense going against the ones on defense. His only pass was incomplete, and the set ended courtesy of a sack by Eathyn Manumaleuna.

-Jake Heaps got the next set with the twos going against the twos and went 4-of-4 for 47 yards on completions to B.J. Peterson for 9 yards, Quezada for 3 yards, Rhen Brown for 27 yards on a key third-and-long play, and Ross Apo for 11 yards.

-The offense got it into the end zone from 2 yards out on a run by Quezada. The defensive highlight of the set was Zeke Mendenhall dropping Quezada behind the line for a 4-yard loss.

-Heaps then got the next set with the ones on offense going against the ones on defense. He went 1-of-3 during the set with a 10-yard completion to J.J. Di Luigi, who faked Brandon Bradley out of his shoes for some impressive yards after the catch.

-Consecutive passes were knocked down by Kyle Van Noy and then by Vic So'oto as the defense threw some new coverages at the offense, which confused the quarterbacks throughout the day.

-Nelson then got the final set of reps of the day with the twos on offense going against the twos on defense. He finished with 4-of-5 passing for 40 yards with passes completed to Quezada for 3 yards, Brown for 15 yards, Mathew Edwards for 17 yards and O'Neill Chambers for 5 yards.

-The set was stunted due to a fumbled hand-off exchange between Nelson and Quezada, and ended with Nelson overthrowing Quezada on a pass to the flat that would have gone for big yardage.
