The box score won't show what a game he had. His presence (or lack thereof) was truly felt when he picked up that fourth foul in the second half. Up until then, Big Al had been--for the most part--shut down. I believe we have just witnessed play from the most powerful center in the Big West, and Deuce truly tamed his game and helped us pick up the W.
From what I understand, Horne has checked out. Sad story, as I see him as having very good natural talent. Yeah, it sucks to not be playing your natural position, but next year he can go back, and all of us at HTG would forever be grateful if he would stick with it for a while longer.
Yes, Deuce did a great job neutralizing Mr. Williams. Just as importantly, the team ignore William's elbows, which were flying in the first half. It seemed as though he was trying to cause us to lose our cool. Andy has certainly taught this band of limited players to keep their fouls to a minimum.
Now if only he can get Alex Harris to improve his calcium and potassium intake...
I could not agree with the OP more. No disrespect to what Yeager and Vaughn did tonight, Deuces play reducing Big Al's effectiveness was just as important as all the points those two put up. (Yeager 8/11 from the 3, oh my goodness!!)
Deuce not stepping up tonight like he did, I'm really not sure we get this win tonight. That Williams got 16 boards is kind of misleading. A lot of boards we got tonight was more about Deuce keeping Williams from the rebound so one of our other guys could grab it. More over, a large part of the boards and points scored by Willaims were during those 7 minutes of Deuce sitting time.
When Deuce was forced to sit after getting his fourth foul, it seemed like we started loosing control of the game and doing all we could to hold on during those 7 minutes. Something like a 14 point lead quickly went down to 5 as if/when we missed our shot Williams got the rebound and the Nacho's would score. Fortunately we then hit a few and they missed a few keeping sufficient cushion until Deuce got back in.
The irony is Deuce got through the whole first half committing only one foul. Then three fouls in about three minutes, wow.
Deuce made a statement this evening, a really good one.
I could not agree more. You also have to respect the efforts from Jared Brandon trying to defend Al Williams while Deuce was out. It was not pretty watching Big Al throwing his weight around. As I expected, Al Williams had an All-BW performance but he had to work really hard for it.
Again, no one should ever underestimate what Deuce contributes to this team. Deuce is that wide body presence in between Al Williams and the basketball that allows us to grab some rebounds we would never have a chance to get otherwise.
It was 51-37 when Deuce picked up his fourth foul. Yeah, I don't understand why they went away from Williams after he started his role. Jared Brandon (our quiet hero) put out a valiant effort against the big thug.
Two-thirds of the way through the first half Williams started throwing elbows and general was playing dirty. Congratulations to all of the Titans for keeping their cool, and not joining the dirty play. Once DJ went to the benck we did not pick up another foul, finishing the half with only four fouls!
