"Chris will be battling for the point guard position. He has a good feel for what we want. I think he's improved his shot, although I don't want him taking three's, I think he can hit the open 17-footer. He's has to do a better job of taking care of the basketball which he's worked on. It'll be a great competion at that spot for us this year."

Chris Smith got significant playing time at the Div. I level as a true freshman last season and he should see even more floor time as a sophomore... Excellent ballhandler with outstanding quickness who has been challenged throughout his basketball career and has responded successfully at each step... Should benefit from the Titans' plans to increase the tempo this season and utilize the entire court for defense.

CSF IN 2000-01: Appeared in all but one of the 28 games and started on three occasions (vs. Pepperdine and College of Notre Dame and at LMU) early in the season... Averaged 3.7 points and 1.4 rebounds... Had scoring high of 11 points including 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch of the win at Cal Poly SLO on Jan. 25, when he also made an acrobatic two-handed scoop layup to beat the halftime buzzer... Also had a strong game in home win over Idaho on Feb. 22 when he totaled 10 points including six unanswered in the closing minutes... He also hit his second and final 3-point field goal of the season in that game.... Had high of 4 assists on three occasions.

PACIFIC HIGH SCHOOL: Four-year varsity letterman at San Bernardino's Pacific High, the alma mater of former Titan great Greg Bunch and former Titan All-American cornerback Mark Collins... As a senior was San Bernardino County Player of the Year after averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 assists per game for Coach Scott Smith... All-league and All-CIF selection... Picked to the all-state third team... As a junior was all-league and All-CIF... As a sophomore was selected Most Valuable Player of the Division I CIF Finals at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim... Also played football as a freshman.

PERSONAL: Born on Aug. 11, 1981, in Fontana... Parents are Ronney and Joyce Smith... Has two brothers, Ronney who is older and Brandon who is younger, and a younger sister, Candice... Business administration major... Is a budding poet... Credits his high school coaches for having most influence on his career, with their strong advice for him both on and off the court.
