Pregame Report - Cal Poly SLO Mustangs

Cal Poly is probably the surprise team of the early schedule in the Big West Conference with a 5-2 record that includes a current winning streak of three games with two on the road and a home win over Oregon State in the first visit by a Pac-10 school to Mott Gym. Front liners Varnie Dennis (16.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and Brandon Beeson (11.7 ppg, 8.3 rpg) are leading the way. Cal Poly is outrebounding its foes by about 7 rebounds per game.

Cal Poly leads the all-time series vs. Fullerton, 21-12, and has won the last four played in Titan Gym.

The Titans have won back-to-back games for the first time in Coach Daniels’ tenure. The program hasn’t won three in a row since mid-January of 2000 when the Titans beat Boise State, Idaho and UC Irvine, only to lose the remaining 11 games of the year in Coach Bob Hawking’s final season. The Titans are 3-1 at home this year and going back to last season have won 5 of the last 7 in Titan Gym after losing the previous nine home games.

TitanCentral.com's Key's to Winning: Stop Varnie Dennis. Try to get him into foul trouble. I saw him last year and he was a good looking player then. And if the Poly boards are a good source of information they say he has improved tremendously over last year. Someone must have improved because this team should not be better than last year... but they are. Babacar will have to do better, scoring-wise because I'm sure the SLO coaches know who they need to stop. The good news is Pape can pass. We just need someone to catch it.

We need to continue to crash the board, cut down on turnovers (15 or less) and play some defense, we have a shot. We can't let them shoot better than 45%. 40% and under, we win.
