NO. 11 CAL STATE FULLERTON BASEBALL WEEK IN REVIEW
@KIA BASEBALL BASH (Fullerton Calif.)
Lost to No. 25 Houston, 7-3
Lost to No. 6 Miami, 5-3
Beat No. 17 USC, 8-1

NOTES: With a win over USC on Sunday, Fullerton averted its first 0-3 weeked at Goodwin Field since 1993…Fullerton's 2.77 ERA over the weekend was the best of the four Kia Bash teams, but its .268 average was the lowest…The Titans' 10-6 start is tied for the second best under Coach Horton (the 1999 team was 11-5 out of the gates and then won 16 in a row)…Sophomore Wes Littleton and senior Jordan DeJong have provided a solid 1-2 punch: the duo is a combined 7-2 with a 2.06 ERA and 42 strikeouts to just 12 walks…Catcher Kurt Suzuki made his second and third career starts this weekend and led all tournament players with a .571 batting average (minimum two at bats per team game)…Sophomore Shane Costa has now been hit by 12 pitches this season and 23 on his career (already sixth in the Titans' record books)…Closer Chad Cordero has fanned 20 (13.2 per nine innings) and walked just two in 13.1 innings while posting four saves and a 1.32 ERA…The Titans' defense has already committed 35 errors (nearly half the 75 errors in 2001) which have led to 24 unearned runs (more than half of the 42 unearned runs allowed all of last season)…The Titans are still awaiting results of an MRI performed Thursday on INF/RHP Mike Martinez…Martinez, who co-leads the team with 13 RBI, has not played since experiencing hip pain before the ASU series last weekend.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cal State Fullerton catcher Kurt Suzuki (Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii) led all players in the Kia Baseball Bash with a .571 batting average (minimum two at bats per team game). Against Miami on Saturday, in just his second career start, Suzuki drove in all three Titan runs in a 5-3 loss and blasted his first career homer – a two-run shot in the sixth that put the Titans up, 3-2. He came back with a pair of hits and a run in the Titans' 8-1 win over USC on Sunday.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Cal State Fullerton senior right-hander Jordan DeJong (Yorba Linda, Calif.) threw his second career complete game (and first as a Titan) in Fullerton's 8-1 win over USC in the Kia Baseball Bash. DeJong scattered just six hits (five of which were singles), struck out eight (one shy of a career high) and walked his only batter in the ninth inning. DeJong did not allow a Trojan to reach second base after the fourth inning.

UP NEXT: The No. 11 Titans will make their first out-of-state trip next weekend when they visit 10th-ranked and undefeated Wichita State (5-0) for a three-game series. The Shockers are 7-4 all-time against the Titans, though Fullerton posted a 3-1 win at the Kia Baseball Bash a year ago. Fullerton last travelled to Wichita for the 1996 NCAA Regional, when they lost their only meeting with the Shockers, 6-1.
