NOTES: With the series win over Pacific, the Titans have won 41 of 49 (84 percent) Big West Conference three-game series and even more impressively, 22 of 24 on the road (the last road loss was at Long Beach State in 2000) under Coach Horton...Shane Costa batted .467 last week and extended his hitting streak to 17 games...Costa has struck out just once in his last 39 at bats (and not at all in 31 conference at bats) and his career HBP tally (28) is higher than his career strikeout tally (23)...Closer Chad Cordero notched one more save this weekend to bring his season total to 10, which is tied for first in the nation pending other games this weekend...Titan pitchers have not allowed a homer in the past 46 innings...Jason Corapci went 9-for-18 this week to raise his average 34 points (.246 to .280)...Fullerton has won its past 72 games when it's taken a lead into the ninth inning...In their nine Big West games, the Titans are outhitting opponents by more than a hundred points (.334 to .228) while boasting a 2.81 ERA...Shortstop Justin Smyres is batting .364 with just one error in 51 chances in Big West play...Chris Stringfellow just missed a grand slam on Saturday, when his hit banged off the left field wall...The Titans have not hit a grand slam in more than two years...Baseball America this week named Costa and Cordero midseason All-Americans among the nation's sophomore and also debuted the "David Bacani" Award...The honor, which goes to the nation's best player under 5-10, pays tribute to the former Titan All-American second baseman
PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE: Cal State Fullerton junior second baseman Jason Corapci (Orange, Calif.) batted a team-high .500 (9-for-18) in the Titans' four games this week. Corapci. Corapci led the team with a pair of doubles and four RBI. He started the week with a 3-for-4 performance against USC on Tuesday. He went 1-for-4 with a run in each of the first two games in the Pacific series before collecting a season-high four hits and three RBI in a 11-4 win in the finale. Corapci also handled 21 chances at second base without an error and turned in some spectacular plays. His diving snag of a line drive in the second inning of Saturday's game nearly turned into a triple play.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE: Cal State Fullerton senior right-hander Jordan DeJong (Yorba Linda, Calif.) earned his sixth win with eight solid innings against Pacific in the series finale on Sunday. He allowed four runs (three earned) on just five hits, while striking out six and walking two. DeJong, in his second stint with the Titans after pitching for Tennessee in 2000, allowed a pair of runs in the first inning, but just four batters reached over the next seven innings.
UP NEXT: The Titans return home for a midweek game against Pepperdine on Tuesday at 7 p.m., then head to Santa Barbara for a Big West weekend series vs. the Gauchos. Fullerton is 38-33 vs. Pepperdine in the Titans' Division I history, but just 4-6 under Coach Horton (Stanford and USC are the only other two schools that have played 10 or more games against Horton's team and posted winning records). The Titans split a pair with the Waves last year, losing the season opener, 5-2, before winning the rematch, 14-7, at Goodwin Field...vs. UC Santa Barbara, the Titans' Division I record is 69-26 and 16-6 under Horton.
