Men's Soccer Wins Season Opener

Cal State Fullerton freshman Michael Farfan scored twice, including the game-winner on a penalty kick in the fifth minute of overtime, to help lift the Titans to a 3-2 extra time victory over host San Jose State on Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

Cal State Fullerton first year head coach Bob Ammann talks about his club's first win on the season.

On his first win as a Division I head coach: "It was a great opening season win away from home in a hostile environment.

"As you could tell from the foul and card totals it was extremely physical and we were on the receiving end the majority of the time. I would have preferred the officiating to have been more protective of the players. The rules are set up to protect attacking skillful players and I don’t think that was the case yesterday.

"The game intensity increased with the foul and injury to Eugene Brooks that required him to be transported to the Hospital for a Cat Scan (everything came back negative) at the start of the second half.

"The skirmish that resulted in the 4 red cards came after a hard foul on Michael Farfan outside their box. I wasn’t pleased with my players reactions that resulted in the red cards but I also fault the officiating for not doing a better job protecting the players. We are young and the reactions were a bit juvenile."

"Winning under those conditions and the way that we came back twice is extremely positive. Our fitness level was the difference at the later stages of the game. Because we aren’t a big team we need to outwork our opponents thus an emphasis on fitness is extremely important. This weekends tournament in Memphis will be very difficult and will test our depth."

On his teams effort: "The effort of all the players was excellent. Although we went down 1-0 in the first half and 2-1 midway through the second it wasn’t indicative of the play. We had the quality scoring chances but just lacked the final ball."

On Michael Farfan's first goal which, according to reports, was from near mid field: "Michael’s goal was a terrific goal from right around the midfield line. He picked up the ball in our half and saw the keeper off his line. While just crossing midfield he hit a ball that sailed over the keeper and just under the crossbar to tie the game at 1-1.

Other Soccer Notes:

  • Marco Rodriguez was declared eligible today and will add strength to the Titans' midfield.
  • The two red carded players were German Moreno and Gabe Farfan. (They both have to miss the next match)
