GAME NOTES: Fresh off their most lopsided win in two months, the UC Davis Aggies welcome the Cal State Fullerton Titans to The Pavilion for a Big West Conference clash. Fullerton, on the other hand, enters the game in search of a win after suffering back-to-back losses. On Thursday, the Titans were on the wrong end of an 89-82 final against Pacific. Prior to their current skid, the Titans had tied a season-long win streak with three consecutive victories. UC Davis erased a two-game slide with a 74-57 triumph over UC Irvine on Thursday. With the win, the Aggies improved to 7-1 at home on the season. Following tonight's contest, the Aggies are back on the road for their next two games. Fullerton has won six of the seven meetings in the all-time series with UC Davis.
The Titans, after trailing by 10 points at the half Thursday night against Pacific, got into a three-point shootout with the Tigers in the second stanza. The Titans knocked down 8-of-13 triples over the final 20 minutes but were not able to close the gap, thanks to a sizzling 9-of-10 long-range shooting performance by the Tigers. Josh Akognon knocked down six of the Aggies' three- pointers and finished with a game-high 30 points. Scott Cutley contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, while Frank Robinson tallied 17 points and six boards. On the season, Akognon leads the team with 21 ppg. Robinson is next in line with 15.2 ppg, followed by Cutley with 13.3 ppg. Cutley and Robinson control the paint, combining for nearly 14 boards per game.
UC Davis is fueled by the tandem of Vince Oliver and Shane Hanson. Oliver leads the team in minutes played and scoring with 12.7 ppg. Hanson is the club's top three-point threat (35-of-80), and is averaging 11.4 ppg. Rebounding is the area that has plagued the Aggies the most, as they are being outboarded by about six caroms per contest. The team put together a solid all-around effort at both ends of the floor against UC Irvine. The Aggies were deadly from beyond the arc, hitting 12-of-21 three-point tries. They also shot 85.7 percent from the foul line, all while holding UC Irvine to 36.2 percent shooting from the floor.
The Titans are beginning to drift in the wrong direction. Now, they take on a UC Davis squad that has played superb at home this season.
