Maston Will Visit Cal

Bakersfield (Calif.) defensive back Mercy Maston is one of the top defensive backs in the Golden State. Last month, he was close to making a decision but decided to keep his options open. And one school making a late push is Cal. The Bears visited him last week and Maston, in turn, will take an official visit to Berkeley next month…

Mercy Maston (5-11, 190) is hard-hitting defensive back with above average cover skills. He can play either safety or cornerback at the next level.

Last month, Maston narrowed his list to five schools: Arizona State, Boise State, Fresno State, UCLA, and Washington State. However, he decided to wait and take some official visits before deciding.

Maston took his SAT Dec. 4, and his Bakersfield team came up short in the CIF Central Section D1 championship game loss at Clovis West (20-10) last Friday night. He will not take any official visits this weekend – he plans to take all his official visits in January, including a visit to California on the 22nd.

"[Cal] came to my practice and talked to my parents," said Maston. "They said come on an official and see if I like it."

Cal wide receiver coach Kevin Daft is Maston's recruiter. Maston says they have a developed a relationship. "It's pretty good; we talk on the phone regularly."

The Bears are recruiting him as a cornerback. While they have not offered, Maston has moved Cal on to his list of schools, "they're pretty high up there."

Maston also plans to visit Arizona State, Boise State, and UCLA. For his fifth visit, he's saving it for USC. "We're just talking but most definitely my dream school," he says.

He also plans to take an unofficial visit to Fresno State. "I will want to play football there if worse come to worse," added Maston.

Maston claims no favorites among his list of schools, which all have offered save Cal and USC. He also holds offers from Colorado State, San Jose State, and Washington State.

"I'm going to wait to signing day [to make a decision] at my school," said Maston.

Academically, he reports a 2.7 core GPA. He is still waiting for his SAT results.
