Walls Set to Go

McDonough (Ga.) Eagles Landing Christian safety Avery Walls will play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday and immediately following, he'll prepare to head to Cal, where he will enroll for the Winter semester...

It's an exciting time for Avery Walls. He is at the US Army All-American Bowl all week, and then will head over to Cal.

"Actually, I graduated already so I come in next week," he said.

Walls has played corner and safety this week and he could end up playing either for the Golden Bears, but they do have one specific spot where they want to start him.

"Their defense, they have a new defensive coordinator and they want me to play strong safety in their system, so that's one of their things. They said I'm versatile. They want me to learn corner also."

Walls will be with a new secondary coach, Ashley Ambrose, a former NFL player who was just added to the Cal staff.

"I just spoke with him last night," Walls said. "I know Cal's know for great DB's, great athletes period. It's a great thing to go up there, get a chance to play, but it wouldn't be bad redshirting. I'd get five years."

Even with the new coaches, Walls never wavered for the same reasons he committed to the Bears in the first place.

"The three schools I considered were Michigan, Cal and Oregon. You really couldn't go wrong with either of them, but I really based it off of academics and football. The west coast has a lot of great quarterbacks, so it's a great league for defensive backs. I put everything in God's hands, talked with family and Cal's best place for me."
