Scarlett's a Golden Bear

The 2011 California Golden Bear recruiting class added its fifth U.S. Army All-American – and second in the last five days – after Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic defensive end Brennan Scarlett verbally committed to Cal during a Thursday morning press conference at his high school…

Brennan Scarlett (6-4, 260) was the lone remaining highly touted prospect in the Northwest who had not made his college decision. The process was weighing on him last week during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which he couldn't participate in due to a collarbone injury.

"I just want to get this over with so I can focus on basketball," Scarlett told last week.

Thursday morning, in front of classmates, faculty, teammates, friends, and some media members, Scarlett finally got the huge weight off his shoulders.

"I want to thank all the colleges who recruited me," said Scarlett. "They are all wonderful institutions. In the end, I was looking at having a good academic school…education last longer than anything else. Relationship with the head coach and coaching staff was important in my decision. The final thing that really helped me decide was the place I felt at home and where I could spend the next four years."

With five hats gracing the table at the press conference: Notre Dame, UCLA, USC, Stanford, and California. Scarlett had his younger brother walk in front of the table to select the Golden Bear one and hand it to him.

"It was just the place I was most comfortable. I felt like it was home," added Scarlett. "I'll play d-end and little bit of the outside linebacker position."

Scarlett is a two-way talent that can play tight end or defensive end at the next level. California is recruiting him to play outside linebacker, specifically the predator position, which is the hybrid weakside defensive end/linebacker.

Scarlett is the Golden Bears 18th known verbal commitment in a class that ranked 16th in the nation, according to, prior to his decision.
