Anderson Fills RB Void

For a time, the Cal coaches were waiting on Shane Vereen to decide if he was going to forego his senior year to enter the NFL Draft. All while Laney College running back C.J. Anderson was waiting on Cal to offer him. The waiting has paid off as Anderson received his offer Saturday while on his official visit, and he made his verbal commitment to the Bears…

The California Golden Bear offense enters a precarious situation next fall with no proven running back to assume the reigns. Similar to 2008 when the Bears had to replace Justin Forsett, Cal returns three running backs that combined for less than 500 yards rushing. Leading returning rusher is junior Isi Sofele, who gained 388 yards. Junior Covaughn Deboskie-Johnson and sophomore Dasarte Yarnway rushed for 70 and 29 yards, respectively, last season.

Looking for an instant impact, Cal offered local product C.J. Anderson (5-9, 200) out of Laney College on Saturday while the sophomore was on his official visit.

"Yes I committed," said Anderson.

Anderson is originally from Detroit but calls the Bay Area home after starring at Vallejo (Calif.) Bethel High School then Laney College. Cal recruited him as an athlete out of Bethel, but he had to go the JUCO route.

Anderson has had Cal atop his list since high school. However, Cal didn't start showing interest in him again until after the 2010 season.

Cal coaches came by Laney in December to inquire about Anderson and rumor spread that he would visit in December before the dead period. He didn't visit, and he didn't speak with a Cal coach until January. But he mulled over one simple premise during the Holidays. "Cal is waiting on Shane Vereen, and I'm waiting on Cal."

Vereen declared for the NFL Draft January 1, but Anderson didn't receive his offer from Cal until January 29. But Anderson says it was worth the wait.

He had planned to enroll this semester to participate during spring practice, but he will be unable. While he did obtain his AA in December, one class is not transferrable. Therefore, he won't report to Cal until after the spring semester.

Anderson rushed for over 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2010 for Laney.
