Cal 7on7 Connection

Cal quarterback commit Zach Kline and four-star wide receiver Bryce Treggs, son of former Golden Bear wide receiver great Brian Treggs, team up this weekend to compete at the Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 passing tournament in San Ramon…

San Jose-based Team Pro Sport won the inaugural Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 passing tournament last year in Fresno. In 2011, Passing Down will host four regional tournaments starting in San Ramon on Saturday. The top teams in each regional will be invited to compete in the first annual Best in the West tournament during the summer.

Team Pro Sport returns to defend it 2010 title without future Cal Bear Kyle Boehm, who led Pro Sport to the championship last year. Coach A.J. Rangel will turn to Boehm's successor at Archbishop Mitty – Andrew Barna. S Chris Santini, LB Shane Smith, DB Teddy Efantino, and WR/DB Jaren Vallner are a few other standouts for Pro Sport.

Their main competition might be Team California Strength led by 2012 Cal quarterback commit Zach Kline. Looking to build a solid team, Kline looked to friend and four-star wide receiver Bryce Treggs, son of former Golden Bear wide receiver great Brian Treggs. Kline headlines the quarterback field, and Treggs is the highest rated prospect that will compete in the tournament. Treggs has offers from Cal, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Stanford, and UCLA among others. But the Golden Bears are looking like the team to beat.

Treggs is not the only Golden Bear Legacy competing on Saturday. Team NorCal Football Club was a late entry to the tournament and are led by Hardy Nickerson Jr., one of the top linebackers in the Golden State in the 2012 class.

Cal Bear signee Brendon Bigelow's Fresno (Calif.) Central teammates will comprise one-third of Team Central Cal Boys led by quarterback Mike Baker and wide receiver Shakiem Barbell. Both are fresh off their performances at the Team USA combine tryout in Austin on Jan. 28 and 29. Baker will also have all-state receiver Deontay Greenberry and three-star tight end Ian Taubler to throw to for Team Central Cal Boys. Notably missing on the squad is Cal offeree Tee Shepard. He is expected to join the team for the New Level/Badger 7-on-7 tournament in Las Vegas possibly with another Cal target, five-star Shaquille Thompson.

Kline and Baker are both rated three-stars, according to The other three-star signal caller joining them this weekend is Jake Rodrigues out of Rocklin (Calif.). His Team Sac Attack squad will certainly have an entertaining early matchup with Team Sac Town Elite led by Taylor Miller-Wing. Sophomore quarterback Miller-Wing is the heir apparent to all-everything Dano Graves at Folsom (Calif.).

One of the Golden State's top sophomores in 2010 was Bakersfield (Calif.) Stockdale running back Deon Martin. Martin rushed for 1,900 yards and 23 touchdowns while earning sophomore state player of the year honors. He will be one of the weapons for Team Bakersfield Burr quarterbacked by Ridgeview's Tyler Ferguson.

Team Diverse Sports out of Stockton has 2013 prospect Zack Greenlee quarterbacking its squad. In addition, competing Saturday are teams led by Hilmar (Calif.) quarterback Andrew Olson, Pittsburgh (Calif.) quarterback Malik Watson, and Ukiah (Calif.) quarterback Trevor Taylor.
