Cal hires Howard as defensive line coach

Todd Howard comes to Cal from Washington State as new defensive line coach.

California has hired Todd Howard as its new defensive line coach, the university announced Saturday.

Howard spent last season at Washington State, but his greatest success came at UCLA. In five years with the Bruins, Howard developed three All-Americans in defensive tackle Brian Price and defensive ends Bruce Davis and Justin Hickman.

"I'm excited to have Todd Howard as our defensive line coach," Cal head coach Jeff Tedford said in a statement. "We've had an opportunity to play against several of the teams he has coached in the past, and I've always been impressed by the way his defensive line has played. He is also consistent with what we stand for at Cal and will be an excellent mentor to our student-athletes athletically, academically and socially."

Howard replaces Tosh Lupoi, who surprisingly accepted the same position at Washington on Monday after 12 years at Cal as a player, graduate assistant and assistant coach. Top Stories
