Cal signs two more in Class of 2012

Madison (Miss.) Central defensive tackle Maurice Bennett had been committed to new Cal defensive line coach Todd Howard at Washington State.

California has signed Madison (Miss.) Central defensive tackle Maurice Bennett and Orange (Calif.) Lutheran defensive back Willie Fletcher to letters of intent, the school announced Friday.

The 6-foot-2, 280-pound Bennett had been committed to Washington State before the arrival of new head coach Mike Leach. Todd Howard, the Cougars defensive line coach at the time Bennett committed, took the same position by the Golden Bears last month.

Bennett had planned to join his brother, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Bryon, by walking on at Ole Miss before signing with Cal.

Fletcher, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound corner, was looking at Northern Colorado and Southwest Oklahoma before Cal offered him a scholarship at 3 p.m. Wednesday, the Orange County Register reported.

The addition of Bennett and Fletcher bring the total number of signings in the Class of 2012 to 17, along with early enrollees in quarterback Zach Kline and offensive tackle Christian Okafor.
