Cal training camp quick hits: August 7

California suffered its first major injury of fall camp, as redshirt freshman linebacker Jason Gibson broke his right foot and will miss three months.

BERKELEY, Calif. – With practice again open to the media Tuesday afternoon at Witter Rugby Field, attention quickly focused on which California players weren't participating, either because of class conflicts or the first major injury of fall camp.

-Linebacker Jason Gibson will miss three months after breaking his right foot Monday, Cal head coach Jeff Tedford said.

Gibson also suffered a Lisfranc injury. Doctors must wait for the swelling to subside before determining if he will need surgery.

A redshirt freshman from Gardena (Calif.) Serra, Gibson demonstrated tremendous athleticism in spring practice, but was not expected to compete for a starting role inside with the Bears' tremendous depth.

-Freshman cornerback Jeffrey Coprich will miss two weeks with a fractured jaw.

-Cal's depth at defensive line was wiped out, practicing with just five players for the first hour of practice. Sophomore defensive end Mustafa Jalil and sophomore nose guard Viliami Moala were delayed because of academics, while redshirt junior defensive end Deandre Coleman did not practice at all.

Redshirt junior defensive lineman Keni Kaufusi did not practice for the second consecutive day, but Tedford did not disclose the reason.

-Other players with class conflicts included quarterback Zach Maynard, who missed the first part of practice, and running back Isi Sofele, who did not practice at all.

-Freshman wide receiver Bryce Treggs saw one first-team rep, lining up opposite Keenan Allen. However, Treggs dropped a screen pass and was subbed out immediately for redshirt freshman Maurice Harris.

Treggs did respond with several nice catches later on, including a leaping sideline grab from freshman Zach Kline.

-The first-team offensive line again featured Tyler Rigsbee at left tackle, Jordan Rigsbee at left guard, Brian Schwenke at center, Geoffrey Gibson at right guard, and Matt Summers-Gavin at right tackle.

Gibson was replaced by backup center Chris Adcock for one drive.

-Robert Mullins and David Wilkerson worked as the starting inside linebackers, flanked by Dan Camporeale and Brennan Scarlett on the outside.

-Kameron Jackson worked as the fifth defensive back in nickel personnel.

-The Bears will practice in full pads for the first time this fall Wednesday.
