'A wide receiver's dream'

Four-star safety Jermaine Kelly would prefer to play defensive back in college, but he likes the sound of playing wide receiver in Cal's new high-powered offense.

VISALIA, Calif. -- Ever since parting ways with UCLA, four-star cornerback Jermaine Kelly has seen his offer list skyrocket, an offer list which includes California.

But, the Golden Bears aren't courting the Los Angeles (Calif.) Bishop Mora Salesian athlete as a safety; Cal wants him as a receiver.

"It's a great program," Kelly said after practice for Saturday's Cal State Game in Visalia. "I spoke to coach [Rob] Likens and I spoke to coach [Sonny] Dykes, and I'm going to get up there on a visit. I've never been up there, so it's a great opportunity. They throw the ball, and that's a receiver's dream ... I play receiver and corner and that's a great opportunity, right there.

"Coach Likens came to my house two weeks ago. He didn't really have all the full information because he just got there, but he told me that, as soon as he gets all the information, he wants to come at me hard and he wants to coach me."

While the Bears want Kelly to catch passes instead of intercepting them, the Cal coaching staff is open to Kelly playing both ways.

"They said I could play corner if I want to -- one way or another -- and that's cool," Kelly said. "That tells me a lot. Right off the bat, they're coming in and they're setting the bar high, so I just know it's going to be great."

While Kelly arrived in Visalia wearing a Boise State sweatshirt, he says that isn't a clue to where he's thinking of going.

"I do like Boise State, but I'm open to all recruiting. I'm hearing everybody out, seeing what everyone has to say," said Kelly, who wants to set up an official visit to Berkeley in late January, after an official visit to Texas Tech, and before possible visits to Oregon and Arizona. The Red Raiders also want Kelly to play wide receiver.

"I would like to play corner, but it wouldn't matter if we were winning," Kelly said.
