Just as Cal coaches were preparing for their in-home visit with defensive line commit Garrett Hughes, they got an excited call from yet another defensive lineman, telling them that he had some good news to tell them.
"I decided to go to Cal," said Westlake Village (Calif.) Westlake defensive tackle Tony Mekari -- who, until Tuesday evening -- was an Arizona commit. "The big thing is that my family and my coaches and people that surround me and mean a whole lot to me, after talking to them about it and going over it, it was the better situation for me."
California first warmed up to Mekari after he recorded a fumble recovery and two sacks during the Cal State Game in late December, and a week ago, offered the 6-foot-2, 265-pounder. After an official visit to Arizona this weekend, Mekari was on his way back, when he got a call from the Bears staff.
"On the way back from Arizona, they called me up and said, ‘Hey, why don't you just come up,' and it was just a last-minute thing," Mekari said. "My dad said, ‘Let's just go up and check it out.' We went up there, and we just got back. That happened yesterday. We were just there for a night. It wasn't something that we planned or anything. We just decided to go up there."
After the unofficial visit, Mekari said he stayed up all night and ran his phone battery down several times, talking to those closest to him, before finalizing his decision.
Mekari said that he will discuss making an official visit to Berkeley with the coaches soon. For now, he's just basking in the glow of his whirlwind romance with the Bears.
Stay tuned for more from Mekari on his commitment!
