CSDTV: Up Close with Ivan Rabb
BERKELEY -- 2015 Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O'Dowd center Ivan Rabb may have the body of a (very) grown man, at 6-foot-9, 200-plus pounds, but his face is just that of any normal young teenager. Somewhere between that baby face and that big body, though, there is plenty of talent, as he proved by scoring a game-high 24 points on Monday against Sacramento despite physical defense on the part of the Dragons' 6-foot-6 freshman Devin Young, as O'Dowd pulled away in the fourth quarter to an 80-71 win.
"We kept grinding and kept grinding," Rabb said. "When our starters needed rest, we took it up for one or two minutes, and our bench, they kept us in the game and they played with energy and that's how we got to win."
Young -- who looked much older and played with much more savvy than would be expected of a freshman, with three blocks and two points -- was Rabb's shadow for much of the evening, as the two got tangled up quite a few times on both ends of the floor.
"He's really strong for his age," Rabb said. "That's really impressive. He doesn't look like a freshman at all."
After the O'Dowd win, Rabb made his way to the bench, and, standing right behind the scorer's table was Mike Montgomery. He went up to Rabb, smiled widely, and said, in his playful manner, "Can I have your autograph?"
"I've been up here a few times on unofficial visits to look at a football game or a basketball game every now and then, and that's my biggest team," Rabb said. "They send me letters, I know they're really interested in me."
Rabb excused himself from his postgame interview obligations, and got to gabbing with the California head men's basketball coach, who is personally recruiting Rabb. Nothing like playing on the same floor where he could one day suit up in blue and gold to drive the point home.
"It means a lot," Rabb said. "I know probably all of the coaches really well, including this guy."
Rabb grinned playfully, and gestured back to Montgomery.
