BERKELEY -- Pulling down a California scholarship offer just a week ago, El Cerrito (Calif.) linebacker D.J. Calhoun was back in Berkeley on Friday with teammates Adarius Pickett and Jalen Harvey to survey the Bears' nighttime spring practice, and he came away quite impressed.
"Intensity," was Calhoun's response when asked to describe what lay before him on the Memorial Stadium turf. "There's a lot of intensity, and I love it a lot. Practice is wired up. Everything is moving fast. I love it ... I love it. I see talent everywhere. A lot of big guys. I'm just hoping when I come to college, I just get huge, be just like them."
Calhoun is more than familiar with many of the faces he saw suited up on Friday, including left tackle Freddie Tagaloa.
"I'm looking at Freddie Tagaloa, because I used to play against him, and he got even bigger," Calhoun marveled. "Michael Barton got huge, too. It's crazy."
Calhoun spent some time watching the linebackers and the defensive line, and though he projects as an outside linebacker, he was quite taken with Barry Sacks and Garret Chachere, as well.
"The D-line is hyped," Calhoun said. "The linebacker coach over there, I like the vibe over here a lot."
The fact that defensive coordinator Andy Buh doubles as the linebackers coach, and that Chachere has spent much of his career coaching linebackers is a big plus for Cal in the four-star's opinion.
"That shows that the linebackers are a big part of the defense," Calhoun said. "He's spending more time with the linebackers, showing them the techniques and everything. I like that a lot. It shows that they get to spend more time with him, as well."
