On Sunday, four of the California football team's top targets took the field together in Elk Grove, Calif., for the Passing Down Central California regionals, and, in a word, they were dominant.
The TMP Elite Stars included Joe Mixon, Adarius Pickett, Michael Lazarus and D.J. Calhoun, and they made a big splash early on by dealing a 25-6 loss to the DB Guru team from Fresno.
"Our team is actually good," said an unduly surprised Calhoun. "We've got Adarius Pickett, Joe Mixon, Michael Lazarus -- a lot of people. We got a lot of picks. The team from Fresno, they've got a lot of good players, but me, Joe and Adarius, we kept it on lock down."
Calhoun finished the day with four interceptions, but perhaps his biggest play came in the semifinal game against the Bako Elite squad, where Calhoun batted a two-point conversion pass out of the air to secure a berth in the finals.
Calhoun said that playing with the other three meant a lot to him, as they have all been playing together for nearly their entire lives.
"We didn't practice or anything. We just came together and just played like we've been playing with each other forever," Calhoun said.
While hanging with his teammates after the championship, Calhoun updated Cal Sports Digest on the status of the Bears, who are pursuing all four of the heavy hitters from the TMP Elite team.
Calhoun said that all schools are still "kind of equal," but he's also been speaking with the Bears coaching staff quite frequently, particularly defensive coordinator Andy Buh.
"I talk to him a lot, probably on a daily basis, and we talk about the defense, where I'd be playing," Calhoun said. "He said he likes me as kind of a hybrid, like a linebacker/strong safety. I haven't played a lot of safety, but a lot of linebacker, for sure, both outside and inside."
Calhoun will catch up with the staff on Monday, and then determine when to take his next trip out to Berkeley.
Stay tuned for more from Passing Down as we talk with Mixon, Lazarus and Pickett!
