After a day and a half of waiting, former California wide receiver Keenan Allen -- the program's all-time career receptions leader – was finally taken in the third round of the NFL Draft, going No. 76 overall to the San Diego Chargers.
Allen -- projected as a late-first, early-second round pick and predicted by many to be the third wide receiver taken overall was instead taken eighth among wide outs, behind Pac-12 rival Robert Woods of USC.
Allen -- who missed the final three games of the regular season because of a PCL strain suffered against Utah -- did not participate in drills at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and was severely limited at Cal's Pro Day in March.
Allen reportedly was red-flagged at the Combine for an irregular drug test.
At his own personal Pro Day in his hometown of Greensboro, N.C., Allen ran a 4.71-second 40-yard dash, still suffering from a knee that was not quite 100%.
What the Scouts Say:
Allen was the top safety recruit in high school but selected Cal over Alabama because they wanted him as a receiver. He is deceptively fast because of his long strides. Allen can go get the ball in the air. He set a school record with 205 receptions, is third with 2,570 receiving yards and seventh with 17 touchdown catches. He also excels as a punt returner. Allen had been pushing both Austin and Patterson for the top receiver selection. He missed the NFL Combine because of a sprained knee ligament and still isn't 100%. -- Jamie Newberg
