New Big Man on the Board

The Cal basketball team is reaching across the country to a former teammate of current Bears big man David Kravish.

Three days ago, 6-foot-8, 245-pound forward Tory Miller out of New Hampton (NH) The Hampton School spoke with the current coach of an old friend, and now, he can add California to his list of prospective colleges.

"I talked with coach [Gregg] Gottlieb about two days ago," Miller said on Thursday. "The conversation went well. We talked a bit about recruiting and talked about Dave a little bit. We were basically getting to know each other."

‘Dave' is David Kravish, who just finished his sophomore season for the Bears, and he and Miller have known one another for quite some time.

"I know Dave well," Miller said. "We played high school basketball together. We went to our first state championship with each other, so I know Dave pretty well."

Now that Miller has started talking with Kravish's current team, it's time for a catch-up call with his former teammate.

"I haven't reached out to him, but we're old friends, so I can get the low-down on what he likes about Cal, see how he's doing," Miller said. "I don't know much about Cal. I've never been to California. I don't think I've been west of Colorado other than Las Vegas, so I don't know much about Cal at all, but it's a good school, academic-wise, as well as just the look of it."

Miller has already gotten offers from Colorado State, Arkansas, Creighton, Minnesota and Nebraska, with Tennessee also showing interest, but now that he's starting to hear from the Bears, it's time to expand his field of view.

"Most definitely, it's a school I'm interested in," Miller said. "It's in California, it's somewhere I've never been, but it's definitely an advantage that they've got someone I know there. It's definitely, definitely, definitely a school I want to visit."

Cal likes what it's seen of Miller at power forward, specifically his defense.

"He's only seen me play a couple times, but what he saw, he liked a lot of what I have to offer on offense as well as defense," Miller said of Gottlieb. "He likes my size, physicality, running the floor, rebounding. It's a little early to tell all of what he likes, but those were the few things that I picked up on."

Miller likes his defensive game in particular.

"I can run the floor and rebound for you," Miller said. "That's what I focus on: Defense and rebounds. Everything else falls into place as you play."

Miller is currently studying for finals, and has a solid 3.0 GPA.

"I've got to keep on top of it, especially here," Miller said. "There are less things to do, more books to focus on." Top Stories
