La Mirada (Calif.) High School head coach – and former Colorado quarterback -- Mike Moschetti spent much of Saturday fishing out near Mammoth. His star offensive lineman -- Michael Trani -- had spent months fishing for an offer from the California Golden Bears, before finally hauling it in on May 29. Late Saturday morning, Cal finally hauled Trani into the boat, as the Bears' first offensive line commit of the 2014 class.
"We couldn't be more excited at the high school, and among the coaching staff," Moschetti told BearTerritory.net as he took a break from the great outdoors. "Any time you can have a kid who's able to play football at a Pac-12 school, at the No. 1 public institution in the world. It's a very exciting time."
Offensive line coach Zach Yenser has long been a champion of Trani among the Cal coaching staff, and both he and receivers coach Rob Likens paid visits to La Mirada during the spring evaluation period. It all came to a head as Trani pulled the trigger after a day and a half on campus.
"He was there for two days and just fell in love with the academic aspect," said Moschetti. "He actually sat down with a biology professor, sat down with a physics professor, had a great conversation with the head coach and the offensive line coach, the wide receiver coach – they've done a great, great job of recruiting Michael, and recruiting La Mirada High School, in general."
Trani isn't just a big body up front (although at 6-foot-4, 285 pounds, he surely is that); he's also very dedicated in the classroom, having come in to the last semester of his junior year with a cumulative 3.6 GPA and finishing his penultimate year with a 4.0 GPA as school let out earlier this month.
"It's a great situation with the new program, the new coaching staff, brand new facilities," Moschetti said. "Cal is dedicated. They're focused. They want to win a national championship, and it's just a perfect situation, when you look at the academic aspect, the tradition, athletically, and we're really fired up. Mom and Dad are there with him, and they're extremely excited."
