CULVER CITY, Calif. -- California will enter head coach Sonny Dykes's first fall camp without two of its 2013 signees.
Three-star defensive end Takkarist McKinley out of Richmond (Calif.) Kennedy did not qualify academically, and will head to a local junior college to play for two years while he is re-recruited. McKinley represented Northern California in the Cal State Game in December.
Defensive tackle Garrett Hughes -- a three-star prospect and a Semper Fidelis All-American -- will also not be joining the Bears this fall, due to what Dykes referred to as a numbers crunch. Hughes had "more (academic work) to get done," according to Dykes, who also referred to scholarship numbers as a factor.
"We knew, especially with Takk, that there was a chance he might not make it," Dykes said. "The deal with Garrett is that he got involved in a numbers situation. It was a possibility when we recruited him, and it turned out that way. We just need to get him back at the end of January."
Dykes said that it was "a little bit of both," roster spot numbers and test scores that contributed to Hughes not joining in the fall.
"He's got to do some things to get admitted," Dykes said. "He's an NCAA qualifier, but he's got to do some things to get admitted."
Marcus Manley -- who had previously not been on the roster -- was never not eligible, but instead had to finish his last few classes in summer school at Santa Monica City College. He did not enroll in summer bridge, not being a true freshman, but is enrolled for the fall.
