Early Friday morning, California head football coach Sonny Dykes officially put an end to speculation and named true freshman Jared Goff as the starting quarterback for the 2013 football season.

"We have had a fiercely-contested competition for our starting quarterback position," Dykes said. "It's important to name a starter and give them the reps they need to be prepared to play. We feel that right now Jared Goff gives us the best chance to be successful as a team, but we are very fortunate to have three outstanding quarterbacks we feel we can be successful with."
Goff -- son of former Major League catcher and Cal infielder Jerry Goff -- will be the Bears' first true freshman to start at QB since Kyle Boller in third game of 1999.
Goff – a four-star prospect out of Kentfield (Calif.) Marin Catholic and a Semper Fidelis All-American – beat out redshirt freshman Zach Kline and redshirt junior Austin Hinder.
"I'm honored to get the chance to start for Cal and am looking forward to going out and helping the team win," Goff said. "I'm super excited and ready to get rolling. My competitors are great quarterbacks as well. It was a tremendous competition that has helped all us become better quarterbacks."
Goff combined to throw for 7,687 yards and 93 touchdowns with 18 interceptions in three varsity seasons, completing 477-of-767 passes (62.2%) for teams that combined to post a 39-4 overall record and 20-1 Marin County League mark on their way to one appearance in the state title game, one North Coast Section crown, three NCS playoff appearances and three MCL championships.
