Just over a week and a half ago, De Anza Junior College defensive lineman Victor Vernon paid an unofficial visit to California on a bit of a spur-of-the-moment trip at the suggestion of his coach.
On Wednesday, the Golden Bears staff hit the phones as soon as practice was over and offered the 6-foot-3, 275-pounder as a five-technique defensive end.
"They called me a couple of hours ago, and I talked to a few of the coaches, and they said they want to offer me a full ride, and it's time for this process to start picking up," Vernon told BearTerritory on Wednesday night.
After being told that he may be recruited as a three-technique tackle, Vernon was mildly concerned that he'd have to put on too much weight, but during the offer call, the staff alleviated that fear.
"Their D-ends are running 240-250, so I'll be a little heavier than them, and for inside, they'd want me to be 285, so either way, it's 10 pounds, so they just want to see where I fit best," Vernon said. "That was great to get that kind of clarification."
After Cal started speaking with Vernon initially, and more so after his unofficial visit, Vernon's father began to look into Berkeley to see just what kind of school was interested in his son.
"My father looked into it a little bit more, and the staff said they're actually going to give my parents a call this week," Vernon said. "He looked up a lot about the school, and found out it's a really highly-regarded business school. I learned a little bit more from them about it."
Now that the Bears have jumped in with Vernon, officially, he said that Cal immediately becomes one of his top five schools out of a list that includes Cincinnati, Kansas, Miami, Oregon State, Texas and Utah.
Now, all that's left is to plan the official visit.
"They told me that once I commit, I'll be on their depth chart," Vernon said. "They want me to take an official on my bye week, sometime maybe midseason, maybe week five."
