As far as Destiny White is concerned, her brother is probably the best brother in the world. After all, Darius White was the one who took her from winter in Mississippi to the endless summer that is California this weekend, during his official visit, when, in the middle of January, it was in the high-60s without a cloud in the sky.
She's going to owe him for quite a while.
"Yeah," Darius laughs. "I know."
This weekend wasn't a bad one for him, either, as he committed to the Golden Bears after originally committing to Kansas State just over a month ago, with the intent of signing early out of Itawamba Community College in Mississippi.
"Cal came on me a little late, and I had a grade issue at semester, so I had to stay another semester for a class. Cal was working with me and helping me out a lot. They knew my classes and what I had to take, and I really appreciated them being there," he says. "[The trip] was amazing. It was very relaxed. It was great."
One of the coaches who helped recruit him – wide receivers coach Rob Likens -- was born in Mississippi, and that made White feel comfortable, despite the fact that there is currently no defensive backs coach in place. That issue, though, will be remedied sooner, rather than later.
"They told me they're bringing in this guy from Texas – the secondary coach from Texas (Duane Akina) – so I'm looking forward to it. They said he'd be hired by next week," White says. "They really made me feel like family. I trust them, because they've got a lot of great coaches, and they really made me feel like family."
White will come in this fall as a cornerback, and had at least one interception in each of his last four games, for a total of six on the season – a total White says should have been higher.
"I probably should have had 12 picks, but I was dropping the ball the first three or four games," he says.
As for the trip, White says that he didn't have a favorite part, though he did hit it off with several of his future teammates.
"The coolest part was probably seeing San Francisco. I can't even pick a favorite part. Everything was cool," White says. "I really hit it off with the running back from Texas, Vic [Enwere]. Kennedy Emesibe, too."
