Just after California's first big recruiting weekend heading into National Signing Day – and before a weekend in which the Bears will host a bevy of defensive prospects -- head coach Sonny Dykes announced the hiring of the second defensive coordinator on his watch, as former Cincinnati and Texas Tech defensive coordinator Art Kaufman officially replaced Andy Buh -- who was demoted to linebackers coach after his defense turned in the worst statistical season in program history.
Kaufman -- a 29-year coaching veteran -- has spent 11 seasons as a defensive coordinator on the Football Bowl Subdivision level. He was removed from the Bearcats staff – along with several others -- by Tommy Tubberville on Jan. 4
"The defense played well," Tubberville said. "This is more about recruiting."
Like Dykes, Kaufman has spent time both at Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, though the two never crossed paths coaching together.
In 2013, Kaufman's defense ranked ninth in the nation in total defense (315.6 yards per game) and 16th in scoring defense, allowing just 21.0 points per game as Cincinnati went 9-4.
Kaufman has been a defensive coordinator for the Red Raiders, Bearcats, Bulldogs, North Carolina, East Carolina, Arkansas Tech, Ole Miss and Northwestern State. The Dermott, Ark., native played linebacker at Arkansas-Minticello from 1976-80 and was a two-time All-American.
At Cincinnati, Kaufman ran a 4-3 defense, which is precisely what Cal ran last season.
Kaufman joins the staff just in time for a big recruiting push, as he is expected to be in the house of defensive tackle Marcus Griffin with Dykes on Thursday, and be back in Berkeley in time for a big official visit weekend, in which he will host four-star linebacker Chandler Leniu, three-star defensive end Jaylen Johnson (a former Northwestern commit), linebacker Noah Westerfield and cornerback De'Eric Culver.
