BERKELEY – The California football team recovered from a full pad practice with a traditional practice on Saturday lasting only about two hours.
"We still got a lot of work to do," said head coach Sonny Dykes. "But you can see some of the pieces finally coming together."
Saturday's 10 a.m. practice will again return to a full pad live action scrimmage, which many coaches say will be a true determiner of how far the team has progressed.
Highlights came from wide receivers all across the field with Chris Harper and Trevor Davis making a handful of impressive catches, but Bryce Treggs impressed in his second practice back from hamstring tightness.
"It was good to see him back today," Dykes said. "He was closer to full speed today than he's ever been. He kind of looked like the old Bryce today and he's been kind of limited up until this point. It was good to see him out there today."
Quarterback Kyle Boehm had a bit of a rough day, opening up the back up quarterback job for a possible contest that will be figured out in the near future.
"It's kind of been back and forth. I would say right now it's Austin [Hinder], but Kyle has made a push and he's been very improved," said Dykes. "They are kind of going back and forth."
Friday afternoon practice was also filled with many recruits coming from around the country coming to talk with Coach Dykes, who is hoping to secure his first commitment in the 2015 recruiting class, headed by quarterback Brady White and wide receiver Christian Kirk.

The biggest highlights of the afternoon session included some impressive catches by Harper, who caught one ball from Goff over the shoulder of the defender, and Davis, who caught an over-the-shoulder grab right near the pylon of the end zone. Goff also threw for two touchdowns in the 11-on-11 drills, with zero picks, but gave up a lot of playing time for the second and third string. Trevellous Cheek had a few very good last-second break-ups, but was barely short of an easy interception. Wide receiver James Grisom also looked impressive with a handful of grabs that were very low and hard to pull in.
The offensive line was also an important part of practice as they looked to improve on the self-assessed weakest position on the football team.
"Better. It's a group that has looked to me like you can tell there a year further a long," said Dykes. "They're just so much stronger, all of them as a group. Steven Moore is probably made as much progress as anyone on our team from last year to this year. He's just a stronger guy, and he's more certain. He's got a chance to be a really great player and we're excited about what he's doing."
A few players missed the practice or played with injuries. One of the early absences to be addressed was that of defensive tackle Jacobi Hunter who missed practice despite being healthy.
"We will have some more information Monday," said Dykes. "[Jacobi Hunter] is taking some time off for some personal issues. We'll see on Monday."
Further updates were given on safety Avery Sebastian, who practiced in limited capacity with the second unit today.
"He'll be back out tomorrow a little more than he has been," said Dykes. "We've been trying to bring him along pretty slowly and he's someone that has played with game experience, so we don't want to bring him back to fast."
Among some of the notable guests in attendance at practice included former Cal football players Zack Follett and Khairi Fortt.
