California completed its 2014 class on Friday, with the announcement by Greenville (SC) 22 Feet Academy point guard Brandon Chauca that he will sign with the Golden Bears.
"They've got great coaches and I like how the academics are world class over there too," Chauca told Scout.com. "It's very multi-cultural and a very prestigious university. There's a lot of history in Berkeley and some great minds have come out of that university."
Multiculturalism means a lot to Chauca, who is half-Peruvian, half-Pacific Islander (becoming just the 10th Filipino-American to ever play Division I basketball when he steps on the court next season) and is dating the Miss Teen Philippines-America first runner-up for Washington, D.C.
Chauca – a 5-foot-9, 165-pound guard – is a left-handed shooter with a big-time motor, solid ball-handling skills and range out to the three-point arc.
Chauca will not be signing a traditional National Letter of Intent. Instead, because the signing deadline has passed (May 21), he will sign scholarship agreement papers.
As a senior, Chauca averaged 23.1 points per game, 7.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game. Before a late-season bout with mononucleosis, Chauca had a remarkable 90-percent mark from the charity stripe, shot 64% from the field and 49% from beyond the three-point arc.
Chauca joins Kingsley Okoroh, the seven-foot center who initially signed with head coach Cuonzo Martin at Tennessee, before Martin came out to Berkeley.
