Joshua Kania of Alpharetta (Ga.) Cambridge had not heard from Fred Tate once before Wednesday, but when he did hear from the California defensive line coach, he got quite a bit of good news.
"Whan I say it was out of nowhere, it was out of nowhere,"laughed Kania, who scored his second FBS offer from the Golden Bears, after getting an offer from Air Force. "It was really a surprise. It came out of nowhere. He was saying I had a great motor, said I play hard, fast off the edge."
Cal wasn't done in Georgia, offering Tennessee commit Andrew Butcher, and a pair of Cedar Grove (Ga.) defenders in three-star defensive end Gus Cumberlander and three-star defensive tackle Quentez Johnson.
The Bears believe Kania – who plays the five-technique – can put on 20-25 pounds of muscle to get up to 250 pounds and serve as a strong presence off the edge in the 4-3. He currently plays in a 3-3-5 system.
Last season, Kania had 72 tackles, 12 sacks, 16 tackles for loss, three tipped passes, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Kania prides himself on his pass rushing ability, and that's just what Tate liked about Kania's tape.
"I was just excited," Kania said of the Cal offer. "It's big."
Kania has a 3.3 GPA, and a 1660 on the SAT, but at this point, he doesn't know much about the Bears.
"I know they're really good, education-wise," Kania said. "They're a really good public school, they have all the majors that I'm looking for, and they have an awesome campus. I want to visit them soon."
Kania wants to get into biochemistry and biotech, possibly majoring in microbiology.
"I'm a science guy," Kania laughed.
Kania is already trying to schedule his visit to Cal with Tate, but hasn't gotten much beyond just talking.
