CAMP CONFIDENTIAL PART 1: Scrappy Said What?
CAMP CONFIDENTIAL PART 2: Familiar Names, Plus Name That Mekari
MORE Camp Notes
FULLERTON, Calif. -- California just keeps paying compliments to Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian defender Trevor Howard.
The Bears were Howard's first school to offer Howard, who's also pulled down Nevada, Idaho and Holy Cross since, and have now told him that he profiles as a Brennan Scarlett-type hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end.
The flattery continued when he spoke with Cal defensive line coach Fred Tate during the Bears' one-day satellite camp in Fullerton on Sunday.
"He's made a very, very good impression; let's just say that," Howard said. "I've been up to camps, I've been up to the campus, and he knows his stuff, for sure. He knows what he's talking about.
"They've used Anthony Barr, [and Scarlett], as guys that they want me to play as."
Cal is the early leader for the 2015 linebacker, who already has ties to the program, having played against and befriended defensive lineman Tony Mekari, and his brother Patrick Mekari, who worked out for offensive line coach Zach Yenser on Sunday.
"They were the first, so they have a lot of love from me. All the schools that have offered me have love. If they're interested in me, I'm interested in them," said Howard.
Howard has visited Cal twice before, and plans on setting up another visit soon.
"I went up there a year ago for a camp they had, and I went during the spring, as well. I start my three-week dead period on Wednesday, so I'll head up there sometime soon. We'll figure it out," said Howard, who came to the camp specifically to powwow with the coaching staff before the dead period fell. "It was very important. I wanted to become more acquainted with everyone, really get to know all the coaches and start developing relationships."
How's that relationship looking, from his side of the fence?
"They are very high, actually," Howard said. "I'm seriously considering Cal as my option for the next four years of my life. I like their confidence, and I like how they're only going up from here. They have a very bright future ahead of them."
