Three-star Clovis (Calif.) Buchanan 2016 prospect Donovan Mitchell is a unique specimen. At 6-foot-8, 180 pounds, he spends much of his time with the Bears as a point-forward, averaging 7.7 points, 8.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. He's so unique – dishing out assists while providing a big presence on the boards – that California has taken notice, and last weekend, the Golden Bears invited Mitchell to visit Berkeley.
"They called me, and I'd seen them play before, and I liked their offense, because it's really similar to how I play – up and down," said Mitchell, who was contacted by assistant Yanni Hufnagel. "They called me and I was more than happy to go up there to see them."
Mitchell made the trip alone, and got to see much of the campus and the inner workings of head coach Cuonzo Martin's program.
"I saw them in the weight room, and I saw a full practice," Mitchell said. "I spent time with the team, and they showed me around most of the school. We went into their libraries, around the school and stuff, and they showed me all the basketball stuff."
As for Martin, Mitchell felt more than comfortable.
"I like him. I think he's a really nice guy," Mitchell said. "He's someone who could easily be my coach. We got along really well."
Mitchell liked Cal's offensive speed and "the way they push the ball," on offense, something he specializes in.
"I'm really good at pushing the ball and finding people on the open break, and I can create my own shot whenever I want to," said the Team Superstar prospect. "They told me they liked the way that I play the one, the two and the three, and that I'm 6-8, 6-9 with shoes, and I'm really mobile."
The Golden Bears have seen some of Mitchell's game film, but want to see a bit more of him in person before extending a scholarship offer.
"They just told me that they wanted to see me this summer more," said Mitchell. "They told me they'd be in Atlanta and Vegas to watch me."
If he continues his torrid shooting this summer – 62% from three-point land and 64% from inside the key – Mitchell may just wind up earning that offer.
