REDONDO BEACH, Calif. -- A month ago, 2015 6-foot-3 guard Derrick Bruce was on the California campus. On Thursday, he was dancing all over the floor at Redondo Union High School, pouring in 15 points in the first half of a highly-entertaining contest between his Inland AAU team and Indiana Elite, led by another Bears target -- Kyle Guy. Bruce finished with over 30 points as his team fell on a last-second shot, following his game-tying three ball with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Bruce was targeted by the old Cal staff under then-head coach Mike Montgomery, and the new bunch is quite intrigued with his talents, as well, with assistant Yanni Hufnagel looking on, along with Colorado, Oregon State (with both Wayne Tinkle and Gregg Gottlieb), Xavier and Wisconsin.
“I like [the new staff] a lot,” Bruce said. “They contact me every day, and we talk a lot. It’s really good. I just like that coaching staff, and the school.”
As for the visit? Bruce has simple tastes.
“The campus was vey big, and I liked that,” he said. “It was just good, overall. They talked to me, and we went around the campus.”
Bruce can score at-will, and is electric with the ball in his hands. His decision-making can best be characterized as interesting, and he takes a lot of chances, but more times than not, those chances pay off. He’s long, quick and very aggressive attacking to both his right and his left.
Many of the coaches in attendance were watching the match-up between Bruce and tough-as-nails Guy, who played with a bit of an edge, especially against Bruce.
The Beavers, Arizona State and Weber State are also recruiting Bruce hard, and though he doesn’t have an offer yet, he thinks that Cal and Oregon State are the closest, followed by the Sun Devils.
