Cal Adds JuCo Center A.J. McCollum
After visiting Berkeley on Wednesday night, City College of San Francisco offensive center A.J. McCollum pulled the trigger Thursday, and committed to the Golden Bears.
McCollum -- who received some interest out of Beaverton (Ore.) Aloha from Portland State and Western Oregon -- has grown from a 6-foot-1, 260-pounder into a 6-foot-2, 280-pounder while with the Rams, and will enroll at Cal in January as an early enrollee. He will have two years to play two.
McCollum joins Francisco Perez, Jake Curhan and Daniel Juarez to become the fourth member of the 2016 offensive line class.
While McCollum's addition comes as the Bears lose the presumptive starter for this year -- Matt Cochran -- and will be going with one of three untested players at the position in Semisi Uluave, Dominic Granado or Addison Ooms, his recruitment was not a function of the depth at that position.
Cal likes the fact that he's a gritty, blue collar lineman with solid technique who has played on a talented line before and knows what it takes to win. Academically, McCollum was a qualifier out of high school, and should fit in well.
