Vegas VIDEO: O'Bannon Taking His Time
LAS VEGAS -- California head coach Cuonzo Martin loves wings. His offense is centered around them, and he’s said in the past that he wants to pile as many wings as he can on the roster.
During the Las Vegas Classic last month, one wing in particular – 2017 four-star Charles O’Bannon, Jr. -- put on an absolute clinic, slashing and driving, hitting shots all over the court and initiating the offense of the Las Vegas Prospects AAU team, which included 2017 five-star – and fellow Cal target – Troy Brown.
“He says he likes my slashing ability and my shooting ability, so he says to keep it up, and get better in all areas of my game,” O’Bannon said of Martin.
The entire Bears coaching staff watched both 2017ers during their time in Sin City, and Cal is one of O’Bannon’s most ardent pursuers.
“I talk to Cal about twice a week. I talk to coach Jones a lot and coach Martin,” said O’Bannon, referring to the newest member of the coaching staff: Big-men coach Wyking Jones. “He thinks I could be a really good fit for Cal, and I really respect that. He really sees a lot in me, in my future. We have a good relationship together. We’re talking all the time, we’re bonding. Good conversations every time we talk, same with Coach Martin.”
O’Bannon has already visited Washington unofficially, and will visit NC State – one of his more recent offers – later this month. A planned visit to Berkeley during the first two weeks of August fell through, but he “definitely” plans to find time to check Cal out for himself.
“Berkeley, I’m hoping just to see a nice campus, somewhere that I’d like to be for four years, somewhere I’d be really comfortable. Same with NC State,” O’Bannon said.
While the visit this month to Cal didn’t work out, O’Bannon wants to see how the Bears look in practice, to get a feel for what life could be like for him in two years’ time.
“It’s going to be huge, because I want to see how I’m going to be getting better every day, and preparing myself for the next level,” O’Bannon said.
O’Bannon is taking his time with his recruitment, and said that the only thing he knows is that he wants to narrow things down before his senior year.
“I have no clue. It shouldn’t be too long, though,” O’Bannon said. “I’ll do it before my senior season, for sure, and after my junior season, whenever I sit down.”
