The California men's basketball team got on the court for the first time against someone other than itself, and the Bears' pair of vaunted freshman didn't disappoint. Neither did the rest of the team, for that matter. Cal defeated Victoria Select, 100-63 in the first of four games in Australia, with several returners playing key rolls on defense, particularly Kingsley Okoroh, who had one block, one assist and six rebounds.
Freshman Jaylen Brown scored a team-high 17 points, followed by 15 from Jordan Mathews and 14 from Kameron Rooks.
In nearly 18 minutes of work, Brown went 6-of-11 from the field, and 5-of-9 from the free-throw line, but went 0-for-2 from three-point range. The Bears hit just three treys on 12 attempts on the day, with makes from Stephen Domingo (who shot 2-of-6 from the field with three rebounds and a team-high two steals), Sam Singer (who went 3-of-6 from the field with three boards, a steal and a block) and Jabari Bird.
Bird went 6-of-8 from the field in 17:44, with three rebounds and an assist, finishing with 13 points.
15 of Cal's points came off of turnovers, and the Bears scored 17 second-chance points, with a staggering 58 points in the paint. Despite the FIBA 24-second shot clock, Cal didn't score any fast-break points, but they didn't allow any, either, as Victoria Select scored 16 points in the paint, just six off of turnovers and zero second-chance points.
Mathews went 6-of-7 shooting for 15 points, hitting all three of his attempts from the free-throw line, pulling down two boards and adding two steals -- tied for the team high.

Freshman post Ivan Rabb tallied a double-double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds in his first game as a Bear, while Brown added six boards, as well.
Senior point guard Tyrone Wallace played over 22 minutes, shooting 3-of-9 from the field and 4-of-7 from the free-throw line, adding three rebounds and six assists.
Sophomore Brandon Chauca -- who played just over 18 minutes -- paced Cal with seven helpers, adding a steal and scoring two points.
