Bear Republic Podcast: Cal Names Captains

We get down and dirty with Cal football, digging into what we can expect from Grambling State this week, what we can expect this season, and the latest in recruiting. Plus, we've got some hoops scoops that you're going to want to hear ...

Lots to get to this week on the Bear Republic Podcast, with myself and Jon Doss.

First off, California named its team captains: Quarterback Jared Goff (2nd year), running back Daniel Lasco (2nd year), safety Stefan McClure (an historic third year), and first-year captains Jordan Rigsbee and Hardy Nickerson.

We go over that, as well as preview Grambling State, and the Grambling Band.

Quarterback Jonathan Williams was the third-string quarterback for the Tigers last year, and he's returning now as the starter, with a deep corps of wide receivers at his disposal.

The biggest issue: The Grambling defense averaged 3.75 sacks per game last season. What did Goff think of that stat?

"They like to bring pressure, but I don't have concerns about it. I don't think we should have too much trouble," Goff said at the weekly presser.

In our second segment, we go rapid-fire to preview the season as a whole, including summarizing coaching changes, why Sonny Dykes is coaching the wide receivers, which newcomers stick out the msot, who's been the biggest surprise, and what exactlly is Cal's biggest question mark.

Lastly, we go over all the goings-on with basketball recruiting, including a pair of weekend visits, and a top five from a top Cal target.

Also, don't forget to read our Fall Camp Features on freshman safety Evan Rambo, freshman fullback Malik McMorris and the defensive line pair of James Looney and Mustafa Jalil.

On the recruiting front, Cal offered three underclassmen quarterbacks this week. Get the skinny on all three of them, with videos and scouting reports HERE and HERE. Top Stories
