Bear Republic Podcast: Cal Running Back Khalfani Muhammad and Defensive Line Coach Fred Tate Talk Washington

Cal running back Khalfani Muhammad talks about his big run last week and who could beat him in a race, while Fred Tate breaks down how the Bears will handle Jake Browning.

Jon Doss and I break down Cal's weekend tilt against Washington, and we have two guests for you this week.

Cal running back Khalfani Muhammad talks about his big run last week (with help from Malik McMorris) at the 21:20 mark, and who could beat him in a race, while defensive line coach Fred Tate breaks down how the Bears will handle Jake Browning, starting at the 6:50 mark, and gives his thoughts on DeVante Wilson and freshman Cameron Saffle.

Tate talks about the Honey Mustard phenomenon at 8:29 on the podcast.

At the 9:00 mark, Tate talks about the offensive line shuffling, and the youth up front, for the Huskies.

Shifting, scoop plays and more -- Tate has the scouting report on Washington, calling the Huskies "solid technicians" up front.

What's the difference facing freshman Browning and redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard last week? Tate talks about making Browning throw over closed windows starting at 10:30. "We've just got to get to him and hit him," Tate says.

At 11:46, Tate breaks down who stood out on the line against Texas, including one defensive end who can really "bend the corner." This line will get depth and slide protect, so Puka Lopa and Todd Barr will have to step up.

At 14:38, we talk about Cal's offense matching up against Elijah Qualls and the Washington defense.

Will Budda Baker play? How will that affect Cal's offense on th back end?

At 18:04, Jon has a next-level stat on Cal quarterback Jared Goff: Just how good is he on deep balls? He's 14-for-17 on passes of 20 yards or more. Last season, the Bears couldn't get the long game going, but will they be able to this week?

At 19:40, we break down the Cal running game, and update the health of Daniel Lasco. At 21:20, we go one-on-one with the speedster himself: Muhammad.

"I haven't seen a bigger fullback in the country; he's a spectacular player," Muhammad said of McMorris.

At 23:30, Muhammad talks about his offensive line, and about out-physicalling Washington.

At the 25-minute mark, Muhammad talks about the speed on the team, including who could maybe beat him in a race.

We start the show off, though, talking some big hoops recruiting news, including visits from Jayce Johnson and Troy Brown as well as the commitment of Alec Hickman.
