Bear Republic Podcast: The Verdict on Cal's Extension of Sonny Dykes

Taking a look at Sonny Dykes's contract extension, does Cal need to change the way it does business? 

Today, on the Bear Republic Podcast, California head coach Sonny Dykes agreed in principle to an extension on Thursday that makes him the fifth-highest paid coach in the conference, and gives him another $500,000 to spend on assistants. But, it also comes with an automatic one-year rollover if he meets certain criteria, and that's going to rub some folks the wrong way, including our host.

With Dykes's new money comes responsibility to win, and win consistently. Is he the coach to do that,and to bring the Bears back to the promised land? Also, Ryan Gorcey has a controversial opinion on some of the older donors to Cal athletics.

Beyond that, we talk about how the new contract affects recruiting (looking at you, Zion Echols) and some of the other big fish in the sea at the linebacker position, after the Bears and Markus Wright parted ways. Wide receiver A.J. Brown is starting to give Cal some more love, and Tony Franklin, who is no longer up for the now-filled Texas OC job, has offered former Michigan QB commit Victor Viramontes.
