Cal junior wing Jabari Bird scores 23 and 24 points, earns Pac-12 Player of the Week honors

Jabari Bird earns Pac-12 Player of the Week honors after averaging 23.5 points in Cal's wins over Oregon and Oregon State.

California junior wing Jabari Bird is the Pac-12 Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday morning. Bird scored over 20 points in back-to-back games to defeat Oregon State as the Golden Bears went 2-0 at home to extend their season-long winning streak at Haas Pavilion to 16 (17, including last season).

Bird averaged 23.5 points on 64% shooting (18-for-28), going a staggering 9-for-16 (56%) from three-point range, and averaging 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists as Cal improved to 17-8 overall and 1.5 games out of first place in the league with a 7-5 mark. The Bears had been picked to finish second in the Pac-12 in the preseason media poll.

The 6-foot-6 guard from Vallejo, Calif., scored over 20 points in consecutive games for the first time in his career, scoring a career-high tying 24 in Thursday’s 83-63 upset of then No. 11 Oregon, and then 23 in an 83-71 win over Oregon State on Saturday that kept the Bears undefeated at home (16-0) this season. He went 9-of-14 from the floor in both games and hit a season-high five 3-pointers against the Ducks, including three in the opening five minutes as the Bears built a double-digit lead.

Over his last eight games, Bird has averaged 14.1 points per contest.

Bird’s win evens the distribution of Pac-12 awards this season to seven backcourt and seven frontcourt selections, mirroring the balance and depth of a conference in which only five games separate first through 11th place in the standings.

Cal will next head on the road to face Washington (15-10, 7-6 in Pac-12) on Feb. 18. The Huskies are in seventh place in the conference, one spot behind the Bears. After that tilt, Cal will head to Pullman, Wash., to face the cellar-dwelling Washington State Cougars, who 9-16 overall, and 1-12 in conference play.
