BERKELEY -- On Monday, California forward Jaylen Brown took home first-team All-Pac-12 honors, while teammate Ivan Rabb was named to second-team All-Pac-12 and senior point guard Tyrone Wallace was named Honorable Mention All-Pac-12.

Brown (15.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg) and Rabb (8.4 rpg, 12.2 ppg) were also both named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team, while Brown -- the only freshman on the All-Pac-12 First Team, was also named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.
Brown becomes the eighth Bear to be selected Freshman of the Year, joining Dave Butler (1983), Leonard Taylor (1985), Jason Kidd (1993), Tremaine Fowlkes (1995), Shareef Abdur-Rahim (1996), Leon Powe (2004) and Allen Crabbe (2011).
Brown is close with Abdur-Rahim, who is also out of Atlanta (Ga.) Wheeler, a relationship that's gotten closer since he came to Berkeley. Brown -- who'd only met Abdur-Rahim in passing once or twice -- said that Abdur-Rahim has been to "three or four" games this season, and they've had long talks after those games.

“I’d imagine if Tyrone was healthy throughout the year, he’d be a first-team guy," head coach Cuonzo Martin said of Wallace, who missed five games with a broken bone in his right hand. "That speaks volumes about their talent level, but more importantly, about how well they gelled with their teammates.”
Despite having the best scoring defense (66.5 ppg) and best shooting percentage defense in the conference (39.1%), not a single Cal player was named to the Pac-12 All-Defense team, though Martin had his own nominee.

“In my opinion, Sam Singer should have been on that team, but he wasn’t a starter, so he didn’t get votes," Martin said.
Singer did start at the point while Wallace was on the shelf, and even when he came back (eight games in all), averaging 5.0 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 4.1 points per game.
On Tuesday, the Bears' vaunted freshman duo of Brown and Rabb added another set of honors, as the U.S. Basketball Writers Association named Brown and Rabb to the All-District IX Team.
Cal, which now ranks No. 24 in the Associated Press poll, and No. 15 in RPI, start the Pac-12 Tournament on Thursday at 8:45 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday's 8:40 p.m. first-round game between Arizona State and Oregon State.
Also, on Tuesday, California baseball closer Erik Martinez took home Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors. The Bears swept Texas in a four-game set for the first time Longhorns baseball history (79 four-game series), in Austin. Martinez saved the first two games of the series, before pitching 2.0 shutout frames with two strikeouts to get the win in an 11-inning, comeback affair on Sunday.
"I was ready to go in [on Sunday]," Martinez said. "I wasn't surprised when my name was called."
